PJ Embarks on Plea Bargain Sensitization in Law Faculties

The Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine, embarked on sensitization drive of Plea Bargain at different law faculties in the country.

The drive started on March 28, 2018 at Uganda Christian University in Mukono where he presided over a public lecture on Plea Bargain. 

Plea Bargain is a process where an accused person agrees with the prosecutor to plead guilty to an offence in exchange for a lesser sentence.

The public lecture which was held under the theme: "Plea Bargaining in Uganda: The Justice Question", was attended by more than 300 law students at the institution.

In his address to the students, the Principal Judge said the future of Plea Bargain and Alternative Dispute Resolution lies in the upcoming lawyers.

The procedure was introduced in 2014 as one of the innovations to decongest prisons and reduce case backlog.

Hon.Justice Dr. Bamwine said the accused persons are told beforehand that Plea Bargains are not entered into to save time and reduce backlog at the expense of justice.

The Principal Judge handed over reading materials to the Dean of Students, Mr.Anthony Kakooza.

Mr. Kakooza thanked the Judiciary for according students an opportunity to work in the temple of justice. 

Uganda Christian University has been sending students to participate in past Plea Bargain projects such as the Prison Week and National Plea Bargain Conference.
